Where To Stay In Muscat For First Timers & Solo Travellers: Best Areas & Hotels

Planning a trip to Oman and wondering where to stay in Muscat? You’re not alone. Picking the right base in Oman’s capital city can feel a little overwhelming, especially if you’re a solo female traveller wanting a mix of culture and convenience. 

When I spent a week exploring Oman solo, I based myself in Muscat, and I quickly realised how much your location here impacts your experience. Some areas are more walkable, while others are secluded or require a car to get anywhere, and in general, Muscat is one of the most unwalkable cities I have ever been to in my 11+ years of solo travel. 

During my time in Muscat, I stayed at a local guesthouse in Azaiba and day-tripped to the beautiful Shangri-La Al Jissah Hotel and also wandered through neighbourhoods like Al Mouj, Muttrah and Qurum Beach and noticed that each area offers something slightly different and unique. 

This guide will break down the best areas to stay in Muscat with honest pros and cons for each, so you can find one that fits your travel style. Whether you’re craving beach walks or history and culture, I’ll help you figure out where you’ll feel safest, happiest and most at home. 

So, where is the best place to stay in Muscat? Read on below to find out!

Why Your Location In Muscat Matters for Your Stay?

Muscat isn’t a small, walkable city like a lot of other capitals you may have been to. In fact, it’s built upon a long coastal stretch with many neighbourhoods spread out along the highway. That means where you stay will directly affect how much time (and money) you spend getting around. 

Some areas are well connected and close to major attractions like the Muttrah Souq or the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, and others will feel isolating unless you have a car. 

For solo travellers (especially women), location plays an even bigger role. You want somewhere that feels safe, walkable and has easy access to restaurants without relying on taxis for every little thing. You’ll also want to avoid burnout by not spending your entire trip in traffic or constantly moving around. 

In short, choosing the right area in Muscat means you’ll spend more time enjoying and less time navigating, so let’s break each location down. 

Muscat’s Key Neighbourhoods

Muscat’s neighbourhoods each have their own distinct personality, from historic forts and souqs to modern marinas, and there’s a wide variety of options. 

If you’ve never been, it can be hard to figure out what fits your vibe just by looking at a map.

Here’s a quick rundown of the five main areas I explored during my trip, which are all worth considering depending on what kind of experience you’re after:

• Azaiba/Al Gubrah – A balanced, central spot perfect for those who want local life with good access to major sights.
• Muttrah – The cultural heart of Muscat, home to traditional souks, harbours, and historic architecture.
• Al Mouj – Upmarket, polished, and ideal if you like cafés, marinas, and that “expat bubble” feel.
• Qurum – A laid-back neighbourhood with beach access and a slightly more suburban charm.
• Al Jissah – A resort-heavy coastal enclave, beautiful and secluded, but also less connected to the city.
• Al Khuwair – A budget-friendly, practical area with a local vibe, which is great for affordable stays and easy access to the city.

Now let’s dive into each one with some honest pros, cons and my personal notes from my own stay. 

Azaiba & Al Gubrah: Best For Central Convenience 

If you’re looking for a base that gives you easy access to everything without feeling too touristy, then Azaiba and Al Gubrah are a really good choice. I actually spent a week here, staying in a local guesthouse and found it to be one of the most balanced areas in Muscat. It’s safe, quiet and close to some of the best things to do in Muscat (without being too close to the chaos). 

Reasons To Stay in Azaiba & Al Gubrah

• Centrally located. Just 20 minutes from hotspots like Muttrah and Qurum
• Close to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and a quiet stretch of beach
• Feels local and laid-back, with shops, cafés, and restaurants nearby
• Perfect for travellers who want convenience without crowds

Reasons To Avoid Staying In Azaiba & Al Gubrah

• Lacks nightlife or big attractions right on your doorstep
• Not as polished or resort-style as areas like Al Mouj or Al Jissah
• You’ll still need a car or ride-hailing app for day trips

Budget Hotels In Azaiba & Al Gubrah

• Legacy Hostel – A friendly and welcoming hostel just a 10-minute drive from the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. It offers dorm-style accommodation with male and female rooms, which is perfect for social solo travellers on a budget.
• Muscat Express Hotel – Simple, clean, and well-priced, this is a practical base for those who want a no-frills stay with easy access to the city. A reliable choice if you’re just looking for a place to sleep between exploring.
• Al Ferdous Hotel Apartment– Great for longer stays or travellers who prefer a bit more space. These serviced apartments come with kitchenettes and are located in a quieter, residential part.

Mid-Range Hotels In Azaiba & Al Gubrah

• Movenpick Hotel – A well-known international chain offering comfortable rooms, on-site dining, and a great location. Ideal for travellers who want reliable quality and convenience without luxury pricing.
• Citadines Al Ghubrah – Stylish, apartment-style accommodation that suits longer stays or digital nomads. Offers kitchenettes, a gym, and modern décor in a very central location.
• Centara Muscat Hotel – Great value for midrange travellers. Offers a rooftop pool, on-site dining, and a close proximity to Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Clean, quiet, and well-reviewed.

Luxury Hotels In Azaiba & Al Gubrah

• The Chedi Muscat – Arguably the most iconic hotel in the city, The Chedi offers elegant rooms, a private beach, and stunning architecture. A true five-star experience perfect for those who want to unwind in style after a day of exploring.

Solo Traveller Tip: As a woman travelling alone, I felt totally safe walking around Azaiba during the day and at night.

Muttrah: The Best for Culture & Sightseeing

If you want to wake up surrounded by history and take a step into Muscat’s authentic charm, then Muttrah is the place to be. It’s one of the city’s oldest (and prettiest) districts, which is famous for the bustling Muttrah Souq, the beautiful corniche (waterfront) and the even more stunning Muttrah Fort. Even though I didn’t stay here, it was actually one of my favourite parts of Muscat in terms of things to see and do here.

If your priority is being close to Muscat’s top attractions and getting a feel for the older part of the city, this is where you’ll want to base yourself.

Reasons To Stay in Muttrah 

• A Cultural hub with walkable access to the Muttrah Souq, the fish market, and the Al Alam Palace
• A photogenic waterfront promenade with sunset views over the harbour
• Great for travellers who want an authentic, immersive feel
• Budget-friendly guesthouses are common here

Reasons To Avoid Staying In Muttrah 

• It can feel hectic at times, as there is a lot of traffic and crowds, especially midday
• Limited upscale hotel options or modern amenities
• Not ideal if you prefer quiet or need strong Wi-Fi for remote work

 Budget Hotels In Muttrah 

• Riyam Hotel– A basic but affordable hotel near Muttrah, ideal for travellers who want to stay close to the Corniche and Muttrah Souq without spending much. Rooms are simple, and it’s a decent choice if you’re prioritising location over luxury.
• Fort Guesthouse – Located right in the heart of Muttrah, this guesthouse offers a local, home-style stay. It’s a solid pick for solo travellers who want to immerse themselves in the historic side of the city on a budget.
• Naseem Hotel – Overlooking the Muttrah Corniche, this is one of the oldest budget-friendly hotels in the area. Rooms are no-frills, but you can’t beat the location for people-watching, souk browsing, and sunset views.

Mid-Range Hotels In Muttrah 

Al Falaj Hotel – A long-standing hotel near Muttrah offering clean rooms, a pool, and multiple dining options. It’s the kind of place that could do with a bit of a refresh, but it’s well-maintained and centrally located for those who want decent comfort without splurging.

Solo Traveller Tip: This area is best suited to confident solo travellers who don’t mind a bit of hustle and bustle. I loved exploring the souk in the late afternoon when it was quieter and then enjoying a peaceful sunset moment at the top of the Muttrah Fort. 

Al Mouj: Best For Modern Luxury 

If you prefer a modern, polished (and slightly boujee) environment, then Al Mouj is where you’ll want to be. The marina is home to high-end developments as well as stylish cafes and boutiques. It’s also where daily boat trips to the stunning Daymaniyat Islands depart (which is something you should definitely do if you’re planning a trip to Oman). 

Al Mouj is popular with expats and business travellers and definitely has a more Western feel than other parts of the city. If you like your surroundings to be clean, walkable and filled with lots of amenities, this might just be the perfect spot for you! 

I really, really loved the vibe in Al Mouj, but unfortunately, as a solo traveller in Oman, I couldn’t quite afford the accommodations here, but if you can, then this is a really chilled and aesthetically pleasing place to stay.

Reasons To Stay in Al Mouj 

• Very close to Oman International Airport 
• Modern accommodation options, including international hotel chains
• Easy access to restaurants, a marina, and a scenic beachfront
• Clean, safe, and very walkable, which is ideal if you’re not renting a car
• Feels comfortable and familiar, especially if it’s your first time in Oman

Reasons To Avoid Staying In Al Mouj 

• Far from Muscat’s historic and cultural sites (30–40 minutes by car to Muttrah)
• Doesn’t offer much traditional Omani culture or architecture
• It can feel a bit like a luxury bubble rather than a true local experience

Budget  Hotels In Al Mouj  

• Boulevard Hotel Oman – Clean and straightforward, this hotel offers budget rates near shopping and local dining. It’s a good match for travellers prioritising cost and convenience.

Mid-Range Hotels In Al Mouj  

• Season Inn Hotel – Offers clean, comfortable accommodations ideal for budget-conscious travellers and families with nice views over this part of the city. 
• Studio M –  A trendy, design-focused hotel that has both style and value. It’s a great option for people who want a bit of flair without too much of a luxury pricetag.

Luxury  Hotels In Al Mouj  

• Mysk Al Mouj Hotel  – Located in the upscale Al Mouj marina area with beachside access. A great choice if you want sleek vibes and high-end service without going full five-star.
• The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat Resort – One of Muscat’s most luxurious beachfront resorts, perfect for those looking for indulgence. Expect elegant rooms, world-class dining, and premium amenities.
• Kempinski Hotel Muscat – A polished, five-star property right on the beach in Al Mouj. Known for its stunning infinity pool, luxurious spa, and impeccable service, ideal for special occasions or luxury getaways.

Solo Traveller Tip: This is a great area if you want somewhere low-stress with everything nearby. It’s especially suited to digital nomads or remote workers looking for stable Wi-Fi and cafés to work from.

Qurum: Best For Beaches & Cafes 

Qurum is a relaxed beachside area that sits nicely between Muscat’s historic area and modern zones. It’s known for Qurum Beach (one of the most beautiful public beaches in Muscat, popular with both locals and expats), where you can find a growing number of cafes and restaurants. 

One of my favourite evenings in Muscat was spent here, watching the sunset from Qurum Beach. I also stumbled across The Crepe Café, where I not only had some of the best French toast I’ve ever tasted, but I also got to sit on the restaurant terrace, which just so happened to be the best sunset viewing spot possible 

It’s not as flashy as Al Mouj or as traditional as Muttrah, but it offers a solid middle ground. You’ll find both chain hotels and smaller local stays here, making it a good option for different budgets.

Reasons To Stay in Qurum 

• Access to a swimmable beach, great for morning walks or sunsets
• Plenty of casual dining options and expat-friendly cafés
• Good location for getting to both central and western Muscat
• Balanced atmosphere that’s not too touristy and not too isolated

Reasons To Avoid Staying In Qurum 

• A bit spread out, so walking between spots isn’t always easy
• Lacks standout cultural attractions nearby
• Some areas can feel generic or residential

Budget Hotels In Qurum

• Arabian Nights Nook– A basic option that is ideal for travellers who want to stay near Qurum without spending too much. The facilities are simple, but the location is right by Qurum Beach, which is its main appeal.

Luxury Hotels In Qurum

• Grand Hyatt Muscat – A long-standing luxury hotel located on the beachfront in Shatti Al Qurum. Offers classic elegance, large rooms, and excellent service. Great for those who want a more traditional five-star feel in a central location.
• W Muscat –  Trendy, bold, and ultra-modern. This luxury hotel is perfect for travellers who want a stylish stay with a social atmosphere. Think rooftop pools, nightlife vibes, and sleek design throughout.
• Mandarin Oriental – A beachfront luxury resort with stunning sea views and modern elegance. Rooms feature balconies, walk-in showers and stylish finishes. 

Solo Traveller Tip: If you enjoy beach time, laid-back evenings, and decent food options without the chaos, Qurum is a solid pick. It’s also a nice choice if you want to ease into Oman before tackling more fast-paced parts of the city.

Al Jissah: Best for a Luxury Getaway

If you’re searching for the best hotels in Muscat for a beach escape, then Al Jissah will be your go-to. Al Jissah is located about 30-40 minutes away from Central Muscat and feels like an entirely different world. Tucked away between the cliffs and the sea, Al Jissah is home to some of Oman’s most luxurious resort hotels. including the Shangri-La Al Jissah, where I spent a day relaxing by the beach. 

This area is perfect if you’re after a quiet escape and don’t plan too much on sightseeing. It’s quiet and beautifully maintained, as well as feeling incredibly safe and quiet. 

Reasons To Stay in Al Jissah

• Gorgeous private beaches and dramatic coastal scenery 
• High-end hotels with spa services, pools, and sea views
• Great for unwinding in luxury, especially if you’re not planning to move around much
• Feels very secure and well-managed

Reasons To Avoid Staying In Al-Jissah

• It’s isolated and you’ll need a car or transport to get anywhere else
• Not ideal if you want to explore the city or stay active
• Resort prices can be steep compared to Muscat’s other areas
• Doesn’t feel like the “real” Muscat 

Best Hotels In Al-Jissah (Luxury Only) 

• Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah –  A sprawling beachfront resort made up of multiple properties, this is one of Muscat’s most iconic stays. Set between cliffs and the sea, it’s ideal for those looking for a relaxing escape with access to private beaches, multiple restaurants, and a beautiful spa. Great for couples or solo travellers wanting a peaceful reset.
• Jumeirah Muscat – A newer addition to Oman’s luxury scene, Jumeirah is a modern hotel with stunning natural surroundings. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, it offers a quiet and elegant atmosphere that is ideal for a wellness-focused or romantic retreat.
• Al Bustan Palace Ritz-Carlton  – Set in a secluded bay with its own private beach, Al Bustan Palace combines opulence, tradition, and five-star service. With its grand lobby, palm-lined pool, and sea-facing suites, it’s perfect for luxury seekers who want both grandeur and peaceful surroundings.

Solo Traveller Tip: While I wouldn’t recommend Al Jissah as your main base, it’s an amazing spot for a day trip or a short splurge. I loved the break from the city and lounging by the beach at the Shangri-La was one of the most relaxing parts of my trip.

Al Khuwair: Best for Practicality & Mid-Range Hotels

Al Khuwair is a practical and mid-range-friendly spot that sits between Azaiba and Qurum.  It’s not the most glamorous part of Muscat, but it’s a good middle ground if you’re looking for affordable accommodation with easy access to key spots in the city.

This area is popular with locals and long-term expats, so it feels more lived-in and authentic compared to more polished districts. You’ll find a wide mix of hotels, guesthouses, and serviced apartments that have more decent prices in comparison to the more touristy zones.

Reasons To Stay in Al Khuwair 

• Budget accommodation options with good value
• Centrally located with easy access to Azaiba, Qurum, and Muttrah by car
• Lots of food options, supermarkets, and services
• Feels local and less tourist-oriented

Reasons To Avoid Staying In Al Khuwair 

• Not very walkable or scenic
• Lacks tourist attractions or beachfront access
• Traffic can be heavy at peak times

Budget Hotels In Al Khuwair 

• Rozana Hotel – A budget-friendly option with clean, well-kept rooms and great value for money. It’s a solid pick for travellers looking for a more affordable stay without sacrificing comfort or cleanliness.

Mid-Range Hotels In Al Khuwair 

• Muscat Plaza Hotel – A straightforward and affordable midrange hotel. It’s clean and functional, with a good location for accessing the city’s main areas, which is great for short or business stays.
• Radisson Blu Hotel Muscat – A trusted international brand offering consistent midrange comfort. Good amenities, rooftop pool, and convenient location near shopping areas.
• Hilton Garden Inn Muscat Al Khuwair – Modern, clean, and well-equipped, this hotel balances price and comfort well. It’s also close to restaurants and a good base for exploring central Muscat.

Luxury Hotels In Al Khuwair 

• Fraser Suites Muscat  – Spacious, upscale, and fully serviced. Fraser Suites is ideal for families, long stays, or anyone wanting apartment-style living with luxury hotel amenities. Expect pools, a gym, and well-designed rooms in a central location.

Solo Traveller Tip: Al Khuwair is best if you’re on a tighter budget or just want a simple place to sleep between day trips. It’s not particularly charming, but it is safe and convenient, especially for solo travellers who prefer practicality over aesthetics.

Where Not to Stay in Muscat

Muscat can be surprisingly spread out, and not every area marked on the map is suited for travellers, especially if you’re going solo or visiting for the first time. While Oman is overall a very safe country, staying in the wrong neighbourhood can make your trip unnecessarily difficult, expensive, or just inconvenient.

Here’s where I’d personally avoid based on my experience:

• Far-out suburbs or industrial zones – Some cheaper hotels are located in isolated areas far from the beach, sights, or even basic restaurants. It’s not worth saving £10–£20 a night if you’re constantly stuck in traffic or paying for taxis.
• Outside of central Muscat – Unless you have your own car, staying outside the main areas like Azaiba, Qurum, or Muttrah can make even simple outings feel like a bit of a mission.
• Completely residential areas – Places like Ghubra or Bausher may be fine for long-term stays, but they don’t offer much for tourists in terms of atmosphere, amenities, or accessibility.

Still unsure of the best location to stay in Muscat? Here are a few quick tips to help narrow things down, especially if you’re travelling solo and want a smooth  experience:

• Think about what you value most – Is it being close to the beach? Walkable access to cultural sites? Somewhere quiet and low-key? Pick the location that matches your travel style, not just what looks good on Instagram.
• Don’t underestimate traffic – Muscat isn’t walkable in the way many European cities are. Rideshares and taxis are easy to use, but being central (like in Azaiba or Qurum) saves time and energy.
• Balance budget with convenience – Areas like Al Khuwair may offer lower rates, but make sure you’re not trading away too much comfort or accessibility.
• Look for verified reviews – I recommend booking through platforms like Booking.com so you can check recent reviews from travellers. These often give insight into how clean, safe, and walkable an area really is.
• Short stays? Stay central. If you’re only in Muscat for a few days, staying near Azaiba, Muttrah, or Qurum gives you the best balance of sights, comfort, and easy transport.
