ALBANIA QUICK FACTS
? How to Get There – Albania is well connected by air, land, and sea. The easiest way to get there is by flying into Tirana International Airport (TIA), which serves flights from major European cities. If you’re traveling from nearby countries like Montenegro, Greece, or North Macedonia, buses and car rentals are great options. Albania also has ferry connections from Italy, making it accessible from the Adriatic Sea. The country’s compact size makes getting around easy, whether by bus, rental car, or private driver.
?️ How Long to Stay – You can see Albania’s highlights in 5-7 days, but for a deeper dive into its hidden gems, 10 days or more is ideal. In 5 days, you can explore Southern Albania and the Albanian Riviera, including Berat, Gjirokastër, Sarandë, and Ksamil. If you have more time, you can venture north to Shkodër, Theth, and Valbona, or take a road trip along the stunning coast.
? Best Time to Visit – Albania has a Mediterranean climate, making it a great destination year-round. The best time to visit is May to October, with June to September offering warm beach weather along the Riviera. July and August are peak tourist months, so expect higher prices and crowds at popular destinations. For fewer tourists and comfortable temperatures, visit in May, early June, September, or October. If you’re into hiking, spring and autumn are perfect for exploring the Albanian Alps.
About this 5-Day Albania Itinerary
This 5-day Albania Itinerary follows the exact Itinerary I took on my own trip to Albania and offers the perfect mix of history, culture, and stunning coastal views. Your Itinerary will look like this:
- Day 1 – Berat
- Day 2 – Gjirokastër
- Day 3 – Ksmail/Sarande
- Day 4 – Ksamil/Sarande
- Day 5 – Back to Tirana
Arriving in Albania
Flight
If you are flying into Albania you will need to fly into Tirana International Airport. You can get direct flights into Tirana from the most popular European cities. I always search for cheap flights using Skyscanner. Both Ryanair and Wizz Air fly into Tirana so you should be able to get some good budget deals if you time it right! Depending on what time your flight lands, you might need to consider staying overnight in Tirana.
International Bus
It is very easy to travel to Tirana from other places in the Balkans like Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia and Pristina in Kosovo. If you are travelling overland in the Balkans you can pre-book your bus tickets to Shkodër on either the FlixBus or Omio websites.
Renting a car in Tirana
As you only have 5 days to explore Albania, this itinerary will require that you hire a car. Renting a car in Albania is super cheap starting from just €45 per day, making this Albania road trip itinerary all the more perfect.
I would also recommend renting a car only if you’re a confident and experienced driver. From what I observed, there’s a significant disregard for road rules here, with chaotic driving, reckless overtaking, and a general sense of risk-taking on the roads. It’s important that you (or someone in your group) feel comfortable navigating these situations and dealing with unpredictable drivers.

For this 5-day itinerary, you will need to book 2 nights in Ksamil.
Things to do in Ksamil
One of the best things about Ksamil is that it’s a picturesque beach town, making this part of your 5-day Albania itinerary perfect for some well-deserved relaxation by the sea.
Unwind on the Beach
Ksamil boasts numerous small beaches, and some of the top spots to visit include:
- Ksamil Beach
- Lori Beach
- Augusto Beach
- Ohana Beach
- Mirror Beach
- Pulëbardha Beach
- Shpella e Pëllumbave
My personal favorites are Mirror Beach, Shpella e Pëllumbave, and Pulëbardha Beach. These quieter, more secluded beaches are just a short drive from town, offering a more tranquil experience.
Keep in mind that some beaches in Ksamil are private, so you may need to pay for sunbeds, with prices ranging from 800 (€8) to 2,500 (€25) LEK.

Spend the Day at a Beach Club
If you’re looking for a relaxing day with a touch of luxury, Ksamil has plenty of beach clubs to choose from. Consider visiting:
- Bianco Beach Club
- Principotes and Tulum Resto Lounge
- Poda Lounge
- Black Pearl Beach Club
Kayak to the Ksamil Islands
Just off the mainland and easily visible from the shores of Ksamil Beach are the Ksamil Islands. To reach them, you can rent a kayak, rowboat, pedalo, paddleboard, or even take a private boat—ideal for larger groups.
Kayak or rowboat rentals typically cost around 1,000 lek (€10) per hour, or you can opt for a private paddleboard tour.
Best Restaurants in Ksamil
- The Mussel House – One of the best restaurants in Ksamil, situated on Butrint Lake. Great for fresh seafood and beautiful views
- Guvat Restaurant – A perfect option for those looking for healthy Mediterranean food and stunning sea views.
- Fourth Island – One of the top-rated Italian and seafood restaurants in Ksamil.
NOTE ON KSAMIL
I don’t know about you but I’ve seen a lot of videos on my social media saying that Ksamil is the “Maldives of Europe”.
Just to manage expectations here it is nothing like the Maldives, yes it is beautiful but not the Maldives and more reminiscent of Greek-style beaches.
If you’re looking for Maldives/Caribbean-style beaches in Europe then I recommend opting for somewhere like Sardinia (and even then the Maldives comparison is a stretch).
Day 4 – Explore Butrint National Park & Sarande (Day trip from Ksamil)
On the penultimate day of this 5-day Albania itinerary, you can explore Butrint National Park and Saranda. Although they are in opposite directions, they’re close enough in distance that you won’t spend much time doubling back.
I suggest starting your morning at Butrint National Park before heading over to Saranda to enjoy the rest of your day. The drive between Butrint and Saranda is just 35 minutes.

Butrint National Park
Butrint National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its incredible ruins and stunning natural surroundings. Here, you can explore ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine remains, all set within lush landscapes teeming with wildlife. Tickets are around 700 lek (€7) for adults.

Wander the Streets of Saranda
Stroll through the charming streets of Saranda, where you can browse lively markets, savour local cuisine, and take in beautiful views of the Ionian Sea.
Relax at Lost Seaside Saranda
Take a break from sightseeing and unwind at Lost Seaside Beach Club in Saranda. Enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool, sip on cocktails, and soak up the views of the Ionian Sea.
Watch the Sunset from Lekuresi Castle
One of my favourite experiences in this 5-day Albania itinerary is watching the sunset from Lekuresi Castle. Perched on a hilltop, the castle offers breathtaking views of the sea, the Greek island of Corfu, and the surrounding landscapes. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sets, and it’s also a fantastic photo opportunity.

Day 5 – Return to Tirana
On day 5 of this 5-day Albania itinerary, it’s sadly time to make your way back to Tirana. The drive from Ksamil to Tirana is a lengthy one, covering about 276 km and taking around 4 hours. However, I recommend allowing 5 to 5.5 hours for the trip, as it’s essential to take breaks during long drives.
Alternative options or Have more time?
Another great spot to consider, whether you’re looking for an alternative to Ksamil or have extra time, is the area around Himare. Like Ksamil, Himare is a stunning beach town on the Albanian Riviera, but it’s far less touristy and developed than Ksamil.
If you prefer a more laid-back, relaxed vibe, I highly recommend checking out Himare and its surrounding areas instead of Ksamil.
FAQs about Albania
Is Albania an affordable vacation destination?
Absolutely! Albania is a great choice for budget-conscious travellers. Accommodations, dining, and transportation are all more affordable compared to many other European countries. You can enjoy stunning landscapes, historic landmarks, and delicious cuisine without breaking the bank.
Are 5-days in Albania Enough?
Yes, 5 days in Albania is enough to get a good taste of the country. You can explore Tirana, visit the historic towns of Berat or Gjirokastër, and spend some time relaxing on the beautiful beaches in the south. While you won’t see everything, it’s plenty of time to experience Albania’s highlights and enjoy its unique charm.
If you can stretch for more time, then why not consider 1-week in Albania?

When is the best time to visit Albania?
September is an ideal month to visit. The weather is still pleasant and warm but the crowds have thinned out thanks to the summer holidays being over. This makes it a great time to enjoy the beaches and historical sites. Plus, hotel and travel costs are generally lower in September as well.
