20+ AWESOME Things To Do In Ahangama, Sri Lanka
Situated on Sri Lankaโs south coast is the palm tree-studded, golden shores of Ahangama.
Ahangama is one of Sri Lankaโs up-and-coming hipster surf towns with great food and many surf camps popping up along this dreamy coastline.
Iโll be honest, it wasnโt love at first sight with Ahangama. We even cut our first stay here short to head back to Hiriketiya.
But we decided to come back a second time to see a friend and totally and utterly fell in love (and realised our initial dislike was all to do with where we stayed and the lack of people we met)!
Iโm so glad we gave Ahangama a second chance. Itโs such a special place and one thatโs definitely worth a visit.
While most people come here to surf, there is so much more to Ahangama than surfing the โgnarly wavesโ. In fact, some of my favourite things to do in Ahangama donโt involve the beach at all!
Consider this your ultimate guide for why you should visit Ahangama and what to do when you get there, along with a few easy day trips in case you feel like exploring the surrounding areas.

Ahangama Quick Facts
๐ How to get there โ Ahangama, located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, is easily accessible by road and rail. The nearest airport is Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, about 170 km away. From there, you can hire a private taxi, take a direct bus, or hop on the scenic coastal train to Ahangama.
๐๐ป How long to stay โ Ahangama is a fantastic destination for both short and extended stays. You can experience the main attractions, including the famous stilt fishermen, surfing spots, and nearby beaches, in 2-3 days. For a more relaxed trip, 5-7 days allow you to explore the nearby towns, enjoy yoga retreats, or unwind at beachfront accommodations.
๐ Best time to visit โ The best time to visit Ahangama is from November to April, when the weather is dry, sunny, and ideal for beach days and surfing. For surfers, the waves are particularly good between December and March. If youโre looking for fewer crowds and lower prices, consider visiting in May or October during the shoulder season. The monsoon season (May to September) brings heavier rains, but itโs a quieter time to enjoy the area.
Best Things to Do in Ahangama
Whether your idea of a perfect day includes unwinding with some Yoga at Soul and Surf, sunbathing at Kablana Beach, tracking down the best nightlife in town (Iโd recommend Trax and The Lighthouse), or seeing the famous Sri Lankan stilt fishermen, there are enough fun places to visit around Ahangama to keep you busy for weeks!

1. Book on a Surf Camp
Ahangama is most famous for its surfing, and booking a Surf Camp is one of the most popular things to do in Ahangama.
With both sandy-bottom and rocky reef surfing spots, Ahangama can cater to both learners and intermediate surfers. This puts Ahangama in a unique position compared to other surfing towns in Sri Lanka, such as Weligama and Unawatuna.
So, if youโre wondering, โWhere can I surf in Ahangama?โ Some of the best surf camps in Ahangama include:

2. Pool day at Dreamsea
Dreamsea is one of the only places in Ahangama that will let you use its swimming pool even if you are not a guest at the hotel. As long as you buy at least a coffee (or other kind of drink), youโll be able to spend your day here chilling by the pool, reading a book, or listening to some tunes.
Not only that, Dreamsea is located adjacent to Ahangamaโs beautiful golden sand beach, so perfect for those who love to alternate between pool dips and sea swims.
I spent many days during my time in Ahanagama lazing around at Dreamsea, and it was always my go-to if I just wanted to chill by a pool for the day.
Oh, and itโs also home to a palm tree swing, so you can get yourself some of those Instagrammable shots!

3. Enjoy a Sunset session at The Lighthouse
If youโre trying to decide what to do in Ahangama at night, Iโd encourage you to head down to The Lighthouse for good tunes, good vibes, and a good time. Every weekend, The Lighthouse hosts a โsunset sessionโ (usually either a Friday or Saturday night) with a BBQ, live DJs, and a constant flow of drinks.
This is one of the โplaces to beโ in Ahangama, so youโll probably find that most of the travelling community in Ahangama will end up here to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and watch the sun go down.
I loved the vibe in here, the music was always on point and the view from the property is stunning, and I actually got to see one of the best sunsets Iโd seen in Sri Lanka from here.

4. Admire the Stilt Fisherman
The Stilt Fishermen of Sri Lanka are a cultural icon and some of the most photographed people in the country! Stilt Fishing is a traditional style of fishing in Southern Sri Lanka.
Fishermen perch upon a cross-shaped beam attached to a stilt and wait there (sometimes for hours on end) for their catch of the day. Head down to Koggala Beach to watch the fishermen in action.
I could have easily watched the stilt fisherman at work for hours on end, I was genuinely so mesmerised by what they do and how they do it.

5. Head down to Terra Resort
Terra Resort is a newly opened boutique hotel and event space that has some of the coolest events going on in Ahangama. Whether you want to party on the weekend or get involved in yoga and ice bath sessions, Terra is the place to be.
I joined one of the music events at Terra and had such a good time, the music was amazing and the atmosphere was fun, but super chilled (no pressure to dance). However, I did leave by 9 pm because I am just a traveller in her 30s who prioritises a good nightโs sleep these days.
They even have their own miniature skate park. Head over to their Instagram to keep up to date with their events.
6. Enjoy Some Boutique Shopping
Ahangama is a haven for boutique shopping. From breezy beachwear and handcrafted jewellery to locally made home decor and sustainable fashion, these stores offer stunning and unique pieces if you want to take a piece of Sri Lanka home with you.
What I love most about these stores is that many focus on eco-friendly products that support local craftsmanship and ethical sourcing.
Mukti Studio is a must-visit for conscious shoppers, offering sustainable fashion and ethically made accessories. For jewellery lovers, Olive Yu Jewellery offers stunning handcrafted pieces and even hosts workshops where you can create your own.
The Shop at The Kip focuses on supporting local craftsmen with a selection of home decor, clothes, and organic skincare. If youโre in the mood for stylish resort wear, then the store at Meoriโs Cafe and Daydream Clothing offers beautiful linen outfits and bohemian designs.

7. Spend the day at Kai Beach Club
The newly opened Kai Beach Club is located in Weligama and is just a short 15-minute drive from Ahangama. If youโre after a relaxing day by the pool, listening to good music, and enjoying cocktails, then a trip to Kai is a great option.
Kai is free to enter as long as you order food and drink during your time here. Their food menu is primarily Western, so you can enjoy dishes such as burgers, pizza, and pasta.
Kai is also located right on the beach, so if you fancy a stroll along the beach and dip in the sea, youโre just seconds away from the shore.
8. Book a cooking class
If you want to immerse yourself further in Sri Lankan culture, then booking a cooking class is a great option. The Deevi cooking experience, hosted by Deevi, is located by Kablana Beach.
Here you will be able to whip up local Sri Lankan delicacies such as string hoppers, kottu rotti, and coconut sambal. If youโre looking for something a little different in Ahangama, then give this a try!
9. Book a yoga retreat
Yoga is one of the best things to do in Ahangama for some relaxation and finding inner peace. There are lots of yoga schools in Ahangama where you can either book 1-off lessons or retreat packages.
Some of the best ones are listed below:
If youโre interested in exploring more yoga retreat options in Ahangama, then you can find more options here.
I chose to do a yoga session at Soul and Surf because I ended up meeting the instructor on a night out, who recommended that I come down. The yoga shala here is stunning as it overlooks a private beach, and practicing yoga whilst listening to the sound of the ocean was just perfect!

10. Get some work done
The digital nomad scene in Sri Lanka is on the rise, and Ahangama is a great spot to come if youโre looking to meet fellow digital nomads and, of course, get some work done. There are a few dedicated co-working spaces in Ahangama.
These are:
- Focus Hub Co-Work
- NETS Co-Work
- Nomads Coworking
- Cafe Ceylon
My personal favourite was Focus Hub Co-Work. This is located in the centre of town, and they also do great food and even better coffee!

11. Eat at all the amazing restaurants
One thing Ahangama is not short of is fantastic places to eat.
This was one of the reasons I had ditched Ahangama the first time for Hiriketiya Beach โ there are so many great places to eat in Hiriketiya.
But apparently, I was just choosing the wrong restaurants!
These days, one of my favourite things to do in Ahangama is revisit all my favourite restaurants and enjoy the food, from budget-friendly Sri Lankan staples to indulgent Western-style cuisine, and plenty of coffee in between.
Whether you are craving authentic, affordable eats or youโre looking to treat yourself to an expensive dinner, there is something for every taste and every budget.
Some of my favourite places included:
- Hotel De Uncleโs
- Cactus
- Manoriโs
- The Kip
There are so many more restaurants to try in Ahangama, and you can read my full list of favourites here.

12. Sunday Sessions at Hotel de Uncles (House of Uncle)
This newly opened restaurant not only serves up delicious food but also hosts a super chilled Sunday night session with a live saxophone player.
House of Uncle (Hotel de Uncles on Google Maps) is situated right on Ahangama Beach, so itโs the perfect place to enjoy some food, drinks, and music whilst you watch the sun go down.
And itโs not just on Sundays that they host events, so keep an eye on their Instagram to stay up to date with whatโs going on.
I loved the vibe in Hotel De Uncles and went back multiple times during my time in Ahangama, the food is good, the music is great and the view is even better!

13. Chill out at Ahangama Beach
Whilst Ahangama beach is small, itโs still so beautiful and a great place to chill out for the day, or even go for a leisurely beach stroll. Itโs also one of the best places to watch the sunset in Ahangama.
Youโll find lots of cool restaurants (mentioned earlier) dotted along the beach, so you can pop in for lunch and cocktails in between sea dips and swims!
To get the best view of the sunset in Ahangama, I recommend heading down to either Thileniโs restaurant or Zest Ahangama, which is a no-frills beach bar that has a great atmosphere and an even better view of the sunset.

14. Jungle Rave Yin Yang Shack
Head down to Yin Yang shack for some fun in the jungle. Unfortunately, the jungle raves arenโt something that is run super regularly, but if you do manage to time your visit with one of these parties, you are in for a very good night!
Not a fan of parties? Not to worry! You can visit Yin Yang during the day for a spot of coffee whilst you look out over the river.
15. Take an Ahangama River Cruise
If youโre looking for something unique to do, then why not book on a river cruise? On a river cruise through the backwaters of Ahangama, you can expect to see flying foxes, fireflies, monkeys, and *maybe* even a crocodile.
It is run by the same people who operate Yin Yang Shack, and the captains โMowgliโ and โCaptain Coolโ have got a bit of a reputation for being some very cheeky chappies with a passion for nature, so youโre in for a fun (and informative) ride!
16. Hang Out at Kabalana Beach
Just a short walk or tuk-tuk ride from Central Ahangama lies Kabalana Beach.
This is a slightly bigger beach than Ahangama with more space to sunbathe, so if you fancy a small change of scenery, then this is a good place to come! If you are new to surfing, this is a much more beginner-friendly beach to learn on.
Youโll find lots of surf shacks located along Kabalana Beach where you can rent out boards as well as get lessons.
Kabalana is also located opposite one of my favourite local restaurants in Ahangama, Veda Cafe, which serves up an epic rice and curry buffet.

17. Koggala Lake
One of the most unique things to do in Ahangama is to visit the serene Koggala Lake. You can head here to go on a boat safari. You will get to see some of the local wildlife, as well as take a trip to the famous Cinnamon Island, where you can watch the cinnamon being stripped and ground.
Did you know that Sri Lanka is one of the largest cinnamon producers in the world?

18. Lamana Skatepark
If you want to opt for an alternative to surfing, then why not head down to Lamana Skatepark to give skateboarding a go? If you donโt fancy taking part, going down to observe is also a super fun activity.
Every Thursday and Sunday, they have what they call a โSkate Jam,โ which is essentially a huge party where you can listen to live DJs and watch people practice their best tricks on the skate ramp.
With some of the profits from these parties, they support local street dogs (which is a huge problem in Sri Lanka), and you can check out the work they do here.
19. Dance the night away at Trax
On a Friday night, once the sun has set, the travelling community in Ahangama will all descend to Trax for their Friday night party.
Trax is a super cool club set in a jungle garden oasis, and (as you might have guessed by the name) is located adjacent to one of the train tracks that run through Ahangama.
Whether you want to party on the dance floor or just have a few drinks in the garden, Trax is the place to be on a Friday. I spent a couple of nights in Trax during my time in Ahangama and whilst I wasnโt too keen on joining in on the dance floor I did enjoy a few beers in the garden.
Trax is best reached via tuk-tuk, and all of the local drivers will know where to take you! This is one of the coolest things to do in Ahangama, so if youโre looking for a party, then donโt miss out!

Easy Day Trips From Ahangama
While Ahangama itself is a slice of coastal paradise, thereโs a whole world of day trips waiting to be discovered just a short ride away. Whether youโre craving a dose of culture, epic wildlife adventures, or just a change of scenery, youโll find plenty of gems nearby to spice up your itinerary.
So, if youโre staying in Ahangama for more than a few days, here are some of the top places to visit just a short drive from the centre of Ahangama town!

Visit the Galle Dutch Fort
No trip to Ahangama, or even Sri Lanka in fact, would be complete without a visit to the Galle Dutch Fort.
Galle Dutch Fort is one of Sri Lankaโs best-preserved colonial towns, which was once used as a trading port for spices and other goods. Today, itโs one of the top things to do in all of Sri Lanka, best known for its famous lighthouse, colourful streets, and, quite surprisingly, its abundance of gelato stores.
Getting to Galle from Ahangama is a straightforward journey. Galle is just a 30-minute journey from Ahangama, and you can go for a very affordable price, super cheaply by public bus, tuk-tuk or taxi.
Make sure to come to Galle to admire the lighthouse, devour some gelato, and pick up some seriously cool art from Stick No Bills (Iโve bought a load of really incredible artwork from this store).

Party at the Doctors House
So, the Doctorsโ house is a little bit outside of town to be considered Ahangama (just a little over 30 minutes away) in a town called Madiha. Doctors House is a 200-year-old former Dutch Ayurvedic hospital turned hotel, restaurant, and music hotspot.
BUT youโll find that most travellers who are staying in Ahangama will head down to Doctorsโ House on a Wednesday night for their famous live DJ sessions. They also host other events to make sure to check out their website and Instagram to keep up to date with everything thatโs going on.
If youโre in the area, make sure to give Doctors House a visit.
Day trip to Sinharaja Rainforest
Looking to escape the beach for the day? Why not book a day trip to the Sinharaja Rainforest? Here youโll get the chance to admire some of Sri Lankaโs unique flora and fauna and swim in waterfalls. Youโll also be able to get up close and personal with cool wildlife like monkeys, snakes, and chameleons.
The only downside to Sinharaja is that it is a hotspot for leeches, so if you plan on visiting, make sure to wear clothes that cover your arms and legs.
Invest In Tailor-Made Swimwear
Located in the neighbouring town of Weligama, you can find Chaminda who owns Apsara Tailors, where you can get tailor-made swimwear and surfsuits.
To get a custom design, youโll need to bring an idea with you, such as screenshots from Pinterest or Instagram. Then you can pick a fabric colour or pattern, and if he doesnโt have the one you want, he might be able to source it for you.
After getting measured, youโll wait for your design, which can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks, depending on how busy he is. Bodysuits cost 14,000 LKR (ยฃ36/$45) and bikinis are 8,500 LKR (ยฃ22/$29).
Chaminda is incredibly talented and has such a passion for his job. We found out that he makes all the swimwear using a 75-year-old sewing machine that has been passed down from his grandfather. I originally went in for 1 bikini and left with 4!
You can find Chaminda/Apsara tailors in Weligama from November/December to May and between May and October, youโll find him in Arugam Bay.

Get a tattoo in Weligma
Now I totally understand that this activity is a niche one; however, if you are in the market for a tattoo, then youโre in one of the best areas for it. I highly recommend visiting Tattoo Color U (which, like Doctors House, is also located in Madhia).
The owner, Nisal, is an extremely talented artist whom I can personally recommend. I came to him with an idea that he totally brought to life, and now I have another tattoo that Iโm completely in love with.
Explore Unawatuna
Just a 15-minute ride from Ahangama lies the town of Unawatuna. Unawatuna is one of the more touristy towns on Sri Lankaโs south coast (which is why I recommend having Ahangama as your base and visiting here for the day).
In Unawatuna, youโll find cute brunch spots, a turtle sanctuary, and the famous Jungle Beach, which is definitely worth a visit. Also, if youโve dreamt of having a go on the famous Sri Lankan rope swings, then I recommend heading down to Shanti Shanti Bar.
If youโre up for a little more action and adventure, Unawatuna is also a great place to go scuba diving.

Go on a safari at Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe National Park is just a 2-hour drive from Ahangama. It is the perfect opportunity to see some of Sri Lankaโs finest wildlife, including elephants, crocodiles, water buffalos, and if youโre super lucky, even leopards!
If you are planning a day trip from Ahangama, consider booking this trip. However, if you prefer to stay in the area for the night, I recommend taking a taxi to Udawalawe and staying at Lizard Safari Point.
