TRAVEL OFTEN AROUND YOUR 9-5⬇️ 🟠 Obvious c TRAVEL OFTEN AROUND YOUR 9-5⬇️

🟠 Obvious choice but make use of the weekends. Fly out on Friday night and home Sunday evening. Really good to squeeze in a mini city break.

🟠 For longer holidays use the same method as above. Fly out on a Friday night and home the following Sunday. You can get almost 9 days away and only have to take 5 days off work.

🟠 Make use of your bank holidays. Tag on an extra day off around a bank holiday. For example around the Easter break.

🟠If you are flying on weekdays fly out late evening and fly home early morning so you don’t have to take those flying days off work.

🟠 Work from your holiday. Commit to working one or two mornings whilst you are away. This can help in saving up a few half days when you get to the end of the year. However this is probably not worth it on shorter trips

🟠 If you are able to travel with work. Make a holiday out of that by tagging on a few days holiday after the work trip is over.

Do you have any other tips?

🧡One thing I’m super grateful for is my supportive boyfriend no matter how ludacris my ideas.

✈️He loves to travel and explore new places but it’s definitely not on the same scale as me!

💻 He also doesn’t have a job that gives him the same freedoms as mine does

🌎I’ll be leaving him for a while very shortly, and Ive talked about how I want to go away for a few months at some point in the future.

❤️Despite the fact we miss each other he’ll always support my travels whether he can come with me or not.

📆For those of us who are limited to 25 days of holiday a year - 10 days in Nicaragua is TOTALLY doable. You’ll be on a tight schedule and will need to spend more on transport/taxis to get to places on time …. but it’s all worth it. ✈️

⏰If you have more time, I would say stretch to 14 days and up some of the stays to 3 nights. This will give you a chance to relax in each location. 💤

Full-time travel/time freedom is the goal but for now, I’m grateful that I get to experience snippets of these beautiful countries!

🤿We paid $20 each to go on a snorkelling tour with with our guesthouse (Graces Cool Spot)

🦈It was a 2 hour trip and we got to see lots of nurse sharks, plus others saw turtles, stingrays and lobsters which I missed

🚤Later that afternoon we had to leave Little Corn 😫. We were planning to leave the next day but they weren’t going to be running the boats to Big Corn due to the wind….. so if we didn’t leave we would have missed our flight.

Day 7 - Nicaragua 🇳🇮🏝️ Today was a ver Day 7 - Nicaragua 🇳🇮🏝️

Today was a very chill day 😎

🍳We woke up for some brekfast and then headed off to explore the island.

🚶🏽‍♀️We headed north of our hotel at Graces cool spot and walked as far around the island as we could, taking in all the beautiful views along the way.

🌴The most popular beach on the island is Otto beach and we were going to stop here but the bar was shut and after all the walking we were super hungry.

🍃We decided to walk through the island and into the main “town”.

🎶We stopped off at a reggae bar called “Beach Bar” for lunch and stayed there for ages drinking and catching some sun and going for dips to cool off.

🌮We then headed back to get read for Tacos and Triva night at Tranquilo cafe. The tacos were AMAZING but our trivia was terrible. We came last 😅

One of my favourite days of the trip!
Day 6 - Nicaragua 🇳🇮 ✈️Today we had to Day 6 - Nicaragua 🇳🇮

✈️Today we had to wake up super early to catch our flight to the Corn islands.

🚕We headed from Leon to Managua airport which was approx 2 hours drive (of course we used our fave driver David)

🔖We checked in for our flight which was very easy they give you a baggage receipt which you must keep hold of as they check it the other end when collecting your luggage.

🛩️💵The flights were roughly $111 one way with La Costena airlines (they are not on Skyscanner so we had to book directly)

💰We then had to pay a $2 tourist tax to board the flight

🛫The flight was totally fine (I was a tad nervous but had no need to be.

🚎The flight kind of works like a bus which was so new to me. There are no assigned seats so you just pick whatever is free.

💙It first lands Bluefields airport where it lets passengers off and more people on. If you’re flying to Big Corn you just stay on the plane.

⏰In total it was about 1.5 hours

🚖Once we landed in Big Corn we had to catch a taxi to the ferry port. This cost us $1 per person

💰Once we got there we then had to pay ANOTHER tourist tax for around $1 to enter the port.

⛴️We then waited for our ferry to little corn. There are only 2 ferries a day to Little Corn 10am ($20) and 4:30pm ($10). Take a look at this last picture for more info on this.

🏨Once we arrived we were greeted by someone from our guesthouse ( Graces Cool Spot) at the port and he walked us to the hotel.

🍹Once we checked in we got showered up and had a little explore. We then spent the evening at at tranquilio cafe drinking cocktails with some lovely humans that we met at our guesthouse.

Hidden in the hills of Nicaragua’s stunning Ometepe Island, lies the magnificent Totoco Eco Lodge. Situated close to Ometepe’s virgin cloud forest, and with breathtaking 180° panoramic views, Totoco Eco Lodge provides a serene and picturesque escape from the world (and from the notorious buzzing sound of scooters on Ometepe Island)

Totoco Eco Lodge offers jaw-dropping views of the magnificent Volcan Concepcion and the surrounding lakes of Omtepe. It is also home to a lush vibrant garden filled with rainbow-coloured flora and fauna, with an abundance of butterflies to match.

Staying here is a truly calming experience. And as someone who spends their days looking for unique hotels and Air Bnb’s to stay in, I can say that Totoco Eco Lodge ticks every box.

If you want to get away from it all and immerse yourself in some of Nicaragua’s finest nature, staying at Totoco Eco Lodge is for you!

Where is Totoco Eco Lodge Located?

Totoco Eco Lodge is located in the Balgue region of Ometepe. Balgue can be found in the southern part of Ometepe, where you will find Volcan Maderas. It is approximately a 50-minute drive from the ferry port in Moyogalpa and a 35-minute drive from the ferry port in San Jose Del Sur.

It’s important to know that Totoco Eco Lodge is situated high up in the hills. The last 1.5 km of the journey here is an unpaved and extremely bumpy road so it’s best to find/rent 4×4 transport.

You will easily be able to catch a 4×4 taxi from both the Moyogalpa and San Jose ferry ports. The taxi from Moyogalpa should cost you no more than $30 (USD) and from San Jose Del Sur, approximately $20-25 (USD).

You will also be able to rent quadbikes at both ferry ports, however, I wouldn’t recommend this unless you are experienced in the sport.

What is the Accommodation like at Totoco Eco Lodge?

Totoco Eco Lodge has a range of accommodations to suit all budgets and group sizes. They do, however, only have a small number of rooms available. This is to ensure that they can continue to be as eco-friendly as possible and maintain a peaceful and calm atmosphere.

Double Lodge with Compost Toilet

The Double Lodge with Compost Toilet is the cheapest option at Totoco Eco Lodge at $65 per night and sleeps 2 people. The room comes equipped with a 4-poster bed, compost toilet (that is emptied daily), a shower and porch offering views of Volcan Concepcion.

This room also comes with a flushing toilet option and comes in at $80 per night.

Totoco Eco Lodge

Standard Lodge with Compost Toilet

The Standard Lodge with Compost Toilet comes in at $95 per night and sleeps 3-4 people. The room comes equipped with a 4-poster bed, a sofa bed, compost toilet (that is emptied daily), a shower and porch offering views of Volcan Concepcion and Lake Nicaragua.

This room also comes with a flushing toilet option and comes in at $85 per night.

Family Lodge with Compost Toilet

The Family Lodge with Compost Toilet comes in at $90 per night and sleeps up to 5 people. The room comes equipped with a double-sofa and single bunk-bed plus a 4-poster king sized bed in the main bedroom. There is also a compost toilet (that is emptied daily), a shower and porch offering garden views.

Family House with Compost Toilet

The Family House with Compost Toilet comes in at $130 per night and sleeps up to 8 people. There are two bedrooms both with a king size bed and a bunk bed. The best part about the house is it comes with its own kitchen, plunge pool and terrace with views of Volcan Concepcion and Lake Nicaragua.

Totoco Eco Lodge

Are there onsite restaurants at Totoco Eco Lodge?

Yes, and the food here is INCREDIBLE.

Breakfast is included as part of your booking with choices such as a traditional Nicaraguan breakfast and pancakes,  For lunch and dinner, they have a small but mighty selection of options, including vegetarian options. I would highly recommend the Vegetable Curry, the portion was huge and one of the nicest curries I have eaten in a very long time!

Totoco Eco Lodge

More about Totoco Eco Lodge

So, what puts the “Eco” in Totoco Eco Lodge? As quoted by Totoco themselves they try to personify and “People,Profit,Planet” stance to their business. In addition to the lodge, they also have an organic farm on the property where they breed animals and grow vegetables.

They are passionate about having a sustainable approach to both the lodge and the farm, ensuring that they give back to the local community at the same time. Across the lodge and the farm, they have employed over 21 people and also offer volunteering opportunities for those interested in understanding more about an eco-friendly approach to business.

Totoco Eco Lodge

Pros and Cons of Staying at Totoco Eco Lodge?

Pros
  • Comfortable and spacious accommodation
  • Incredible Views
  • Restaurant with amazing food
  • Great pool
  • Peaceful
  • Surrounded by nature
  • Eco-friendly
  • Free Wifi (only available in the lobby)
Cons
  • Far out of town
  • Creepy Crawlies (scorpians and taratulas)

BUT if there is one thing I learnt from my stay at Hotel Arenal Lodge in Costa Rica, is that any stay worthwhile with a stunning volcano view will be uphill and far away from town. And, as for the creepy crawlies; it is in the jungle afterall.

Totoco Eco Lodge

Would I stay at Totoco Eco Lodge again?

Yes, 100% In fact, I left wishing that I could stay for a few more nights (as two was just not enough!)  The lodge is super peaceful and the volcano/lake views are insane. The gardens are also stunning and I just couldn’t believe how many colourful butterflies where whizzing around the place. My favourite thing to do at Totoco Eco Lodge was to wake up before sunrise and watch as the Volcano view would reveal itself across the landscape as the night turned into day.
